3 Photos, 3 Ways

When you're first starting out as a photographer, even after you've mastered the camera, there's a beast you must tackle before you really hit your stride - your style. Are you a light and airy photographer? Are you a fan of the dark and moody look? Or how hot is the film look right now, am I right??!!

Back in 2011 I wrote an article titled 3 Photos, 3 Ways. In the post I explored the impact processing can have on a photo. I used editing styles that were very popular at the time (and unfortunately also my noob "tilt" in almost every photo...) and applied them to each, including my edit of each image alongside. Looking back at that post now, it's interesting to see how dated those editing trends now look. Yup, just like really big hair or fanny packs, photographers go through trends just like everyone else.

I thought it would be fun to apply the same idea to images using trends for the past couple of years. Yes, the era of light and airy, dark and moody and film. The edit I delivered to the clients can be seen as the first in each series.

You know what's really tough? All of these edits work wonderfully on these images. I love the film trend right now with it's bright greens and man, can it really flatter the skin tones! On the flip side, sometimes when I'm editing, it's hard not to pull myself to a dark and moody edit. Some locations and some styling just really call to that look. In the end though, no matter how many times I experiment I always come back to my style that I consider a bold, colorful, classic edit.

Just as the post before this, this article is in no way meant to throw shade (gosh, let's see how this slang dates this in a few years...) on photographers who deliver images in any of the styles I have used. There are clients for every photographer and a photographer for every client. When choosing your photographer, it's important that you book that photographer because you like their work, you like their style and the end product is what you want to hang in your home. While it's possible for me to edit and mimic the style of other photographers, I want my clients to hire me because they love my work and my creative eye. Being on the same page before the session begins is a great way to find success with a photographer!

Jaclyn and Brad's Great Falls Engagements

Does anyone else take for granted their local landmarks? Whether you live in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, New York City or here at home in the Washington DC area, do you take advantage of nearby landmarks or do you avoid them (and tourists) like the plague?

Raises hand.

Guilty. Absolutely guilty. I've lived in this area over 20 years, and not once have I ever visited Great Falls National Park. Then, one of my best clients Jaclyn got engaged to Brad and suggested the spot for her engagement session. I went into it with all of these preconceived notions of what the popular attraction would be like; I'd have to navigate huge crowds and leave extra early because parking would most surely be tough and 495 traffic is a beast. Well, basically none of those things happened. When I wasn't making constant references to how "this looks just like The Last of the Mohicans", I managed to capture these insanely cool images for Mr. and Mrs. Carlson.

Alyssa's Senior Portraits

It's not everyday your clients are someone that you've held as an infant - well, not your senior clients anyway. (Newborn clients do tend to start a bit small...) Today, this senior and my beautiful niece turn 18. Alyssa will be headed off to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in the fall to study elementary education. While she's planning her bucket list as she transitions into adulthood, this session checked off a few bucket list items of my own - shooting a dancer in pointe shoes and on the top of a parking garage. Yes, a parking garage. In the words of Will Ferrell, "Parking garages - they're so hot right now..." Take a peak at the rest of our session and see why!

Nicole and Bobby

I cannot believe it's taken me so long to share more images from this gorgeous session! While Bobby and Nicole are based out of Philadelphia currently, many members of their family are here in the DC area. We had just one short weekend for engagement photos, rain or shine, warmth or - bitter cold! It was an very, very brisk session, but don't these two look warm and cozy? I had so much fun working with these two and loved planning along with Nicole, and my heart skipped a beat when she said she was hoping to mix tulle and plaid. These two nailed it, and I cannot wait for the fall wedding!

The Savage Family

One of the best aspects of my job is working with clients again and again over the years and watching how their families grow. I've seen a senior in high school through to her wedding. Engaged couples to parents. I met Mark and Shannon for maternity photos back in January of 2014 and this past fall I had the opportunity to photograph their gorgeous family of FOUR.

These boys were so well behaved, and while Shannon is outnumbered, she couldn't be in better company. I absolutely adored every image from this session, but here are just some of my favorites!
